PSG Defeats Marseille in a Shootout to Secure Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now secured the prestigious trophy on fourteen separate occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a dramatic leveler followed by a successful spot-kick decider to get past their arch-rivals in the Gulf and secure a fourth straight Trophee des Champions title.

The European champions seemed to be coasting towards a straightforward win in the showdown featuring the Ligue 1 winners and the Coupe de France holders after the French winger opened the net in the opening stages.

Yet, the southern French side fired twice in the closing moments to take a shock lead. First, the English forward converted from the spot-kick, before the defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable turn of events, the Portuguese striker grabbed a vital equaliser in the final seconds to force the match into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Chevalier then stood as the hero, stopping crucial attempts from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all converted with composure for PSG to seal a 4-1 shootout victory.

The record champions Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now lifted this competition for the twelfth time in the last thirteen seasons.
